“Food for Thought” ChickChat Networking Soiree
There’s so much talk these days about food quality – or lack thereof – and what’s REALLY in the food we eat. It’s hard figuring out Organic vs. Natural vs. Biodynamic vs. Sustainable. It’s enough to make a girl dizzy and want to reach for the Doritos. But…stop! ChickChat can help.
Local Farmer’s Markets have enjoyed a resurgence across the country, and Seattle has some of the best. “Food For Thought” discusses the benefits of “buying local” food and why it’s healthier and community building.
Our illustrious speaker panel includes:
*Lucy Norris, Slow Food Seattle: Lucy is the past co-chair of Slow Food Seattle and will enlighten us on the movement and why slow is better. The Slow Food movement was borne in Italy to protest McDonalds’ opening in Rome. Slow Food’s mission is to reconnect consumers with the farmers, traditions, plants, animals and land that produce our food. Lucy is author of, Pickled: Preserving a World of Tastes and Traditions and is currently Regional Food System Developer at Puget Sound Food Network, connecting farm to market.
*Kiyo Marsh and Laura Cooper – fisherWOMEN; authors, Fishes & Dishes: Kiyo and her sister Tomi come from a long line of fishermen. Tomi has 27 years in the biz and is owner and Skipper of the commercial fishing boat, Savage. Kiyo was a boat cook and deck hand on Savage for five years. Laura worked on fishing boats in Alaska and became an expert in sustainable fishing; and later worked for the World Wildlife Fund International’s Global Oceans and Arctic Programs. The ladies will share tall tales of their fishing adventures (ala, The Deadliest Catch) and tell us what it means to be a responsible and sustainable fisherwoman. They’ll also be signing and selling their book, Fishes & Dishes
*Stephanie Allstot and her husband Billy own Billy’s Gardens, a Certified Organic Farm in Tonasket, WA – Whole Foods in Ravenna carries Billy’s Gardens produce. Stephanie grows organic herbs and flowers and sells beautiful wreaths and floral arrangements. She’s also a bee keeper (30 hives)! Stephanie will share stories of her idyllic life on the farm and what it means to be “Certified Organic.”
*Whole Foods – We’ll meet in the cooking studio and learn how to make Seafood Dumplings (the recipe is from the Fishes & Dishes cookbook). We’ll learn more about the Whole Foods brand, their commitment to purchasing locally grown produce and foods and what it’s like working for the sometimes infamous founder, John Mackey. Ten local WA food brands from caramels to cheese will be showcased, making it easier for you to Buy Local.
Featured non-profit: Harvest Against Hunger, a program of Rotary First Harvest, connects volunteers (called “gleaners”) with local farmers who haven’t sold all their produce by harvest. Rather than let it go to waste, Gleaners pick the left over fruits and vegetables which are then donated to local food banks. Genius! ChickChat will be organizing a Gleaning Group, so sign up at the Soiree.
Whole Foods (Ravenna), 1026 NE 64th Street, Seattle, WA, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
